China, the year 746, the Tang Dynasty. The country is experiencing a period of tremendous prosperity. The Emperor Li is a great lover of women, art and music and has numerous concubines. His favourite is called Yang. When a great banquet is prepared in her honour, the Emperor, caught up in a game of Go, forgets about it.
