Two years after the Fukushima nuclear accident, orphans Akiko (12) and Osamu (9) live with their grandmother Baa-Chan in a refugee camp. When their grandmother dies and a distant uncle shows up to take them back to Tokyo, Osamu convinces his sister to run away. They must go and lay their grandmother’s ashes at the foot of the family altar in Tomioka, in the heart of the forbidden zone. It is there that Baa-Chan would have liked to be laid to rest. Osamu, a reserved child who only communicates with Yokais – supernatural and mischievous creatures – and Akiko, the little beauty blogger, embark on a dangerous quest. Pursued by a taciturn policeman with a passion for butterflies and by their uncle in a hurry to leave the battered region, the children rediscover the strange province of Fukushima where nature is gradually reclaiming its rights. Assisted by an eccentric old man who has chosen to stay in the contaminated area to help the animals in perdition, the brother and sister are confronted with a brand new Yokai, as elusive as it is disturbing, born of radioactivity. But Osamu and Akiko’s determination will not fail. Courageous and united, they will reach the uninhabited farm of Baa-Chan. In an unexpected and dreamlike finale, the old woman’s spirit will find peace.
